ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” is finally back! Last week we were treated to an episode that felt more life it should have been the Midseason finale and it technically was, that’s because the fall schedule got messed up so they had to push this episode back. Which explains why we were treated to a ton of wrap-up answers to some of what went down in the fall and have been open up to a new storyline. “He’s Dead” was an excellent episode that really showcased Viola Davis and Karla Souza, the latter who has been doing her best work yet this season. Let’s discuss it down below.
We begin the episode with the police showing up to the bloody elevator and talking to a witness who tells them that whatever happened, Annalise (Viola Davis) was involved. The police of course mistake this as a crime scene. But where are Annalise and Laurel (Karla Souza) well they are at the hospital where Laurel is rushed in for immediate care.
We then go to Connor (Jack Falahee) standing outside Laurel/Wes’ apartment still on the phone with Michaela (Aja Naomi King), where we left them last time talking about Simon’s (Behzad Dabu) shooting and Asher’s (Matt Mcgorry) arrest. Connor is interrupted by a phone call by Annalise telling him the situation with Laurel and to get to the hospital quick. He does that thing that people do in entertainment where THEY REPEAT WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE OTHER LINE, which in this case alerts Dominic (Nicholas Gonzalez), who is still eavesdropping, to relay some pertinent information to you know who.
Connor’s first stop before the hospital is over at Nate’s (Billy Brown) where he informs them (remember Bonnie [Liza Weil] is there for their AA [read Annalise Anon] meeting) on what happened with Simon and Asher, asking for help.
Frank (Charlie Weber) then arrives to the hospital demanding to see Laurel and him and Annalise are finally let in when Frank tells them he is the father of the baby. They are able to get an update on the baby and Laurel, who has still not woken up yet. So I don’t know if my eyes were decieving me or not but the baby is clearly Wes’ so why were the doctors so keen on letting Frank in? We come to find out later in the episode that the baby is in fact Wes’ so yay for us Wes/Laurel shippers.
Just when they let Frank and Annalise in, they are torn apart by the Department of Human Services barging in informing them that Laurel apparently has as a history that requires them to step in. Annalise states that she is Ms. Castillo’s attorney so she’s gonna need all the so called evidence. It also seems that the reason they are there is because Mr. Castillo (Esai Morales) has informed them that Laurel has a” history with mental illness” and demands a drug test which reveals that Laurel had cocaine in her system. It seems to Annalise (and honestly us viewers) that Jorge will stop at nothing to protect Antares and his illegal activities. Even if that means destroying his daughters reputation and life.
All of the legal drama means that Annalise has to bring in Isaac (Jimmy Smits) to re-diagnose Laurel because she believes that Jorge has lied about many of the so called “facts” in his case. Which now explains why Isaac is there. He doesn’t want to go through with any of it but he reluctantly does when Annalise threatens to report him and his ex wife to the review board for their treatment of Annalise and Bonnie. It’s typical of Annalise to blackmail but in this case I believe it’s warranted.
Laurel eventually wakes up and is in total shock about everything that happened. She reveals that the only person who can help is Dominic and that he was the mystery caller from the last episode. Too bad Frank kinda killed him because he thought he had information on the baby and Mr. Castillo’s wants with it.
So what’s going on with Michaela and the rest of the gang. Well Asher got arrested because he told the police that he picked up the gun that shot Simon, which is truthful. Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) and Michaela come to that conclusion and corroborate the story so they are all on the same page. Tegan (Amirah Vann) doesn’t believe the gang and knows something is up.
While at the hospital worrying about Laurel the gang, including Asher because they don’t really have anything to charge him on, gets the news that Simon is alive after a successful surgery. The gang minus Oliver are all in agreement in hoping that Simon doesn’t survive or won’t have the cognitive abilities to tell the truth about what happened. After an off handed comment about sending Frank after Simon, Oliver puts his foot down and finally realizes that our gang is really messed up after everything.
We end the episode with the revelation that Wes/Christophe KNOWS DOMINIC and left him a voicemail on the night of the fire aka HIS DEATH DAY. WOAH!!!!
Be sure to catch an all new HTGAWM tonight on ABC at 10/9c.
